The community has partaken in a tremendous number of Twitter spaces, in-person meetups, hackathons, workshops, and events. Developer community contributions to the open-source ecosystem and codebase via Hedera Improvement Proposals (HIPs) rose significantly and the amount of projects launched by the developer community has been jaw-dropping. Let\u2019s take a closer look at the various facets of community growth in more detail, and start by highlighting community social channels:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hedera\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a> <\/strong>+47% going from 177,881 to 261,228 followers<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/hederahashgraph\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>YouTube<\/strong> <\/a>+24% from 28,600 to 35,400 subscribers<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/hashgraph\/\" target=\"_blank\">LinkedIn<\/a><\/strong> +66% from 18,893 to 31,294 followers<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Major community-focused initiatives included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/ecosystem-week\" target=\"_blank\">Hedera Ecosystem Week<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/blog\/hedera-x-devdao-developer-workshops-twitter-spaces-and-community-building\" target=\"_blank\">Hedera x DevDAO workshops and community building<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/blog\/hot-defi-summer-an-nfts-road-trip-from-hedera-to-ethereum\" target=\"_blank\">Hot Defi Summer: An NFT\u2019s road trip from Ethereum to Hedera<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/ecosystem\" target=\"_blank\">Ecosystem Page<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Twitter Spaces have been a new endeavor for Hedera in 2022, enabling discussion around various topics, such as NFTs, DeFi, and web3. Spaces have showcased projects in the Hedera ecosystem and will continue to run throughout 2023.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We\u2019re excited to release a full revamp of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/discord\" target=\"_blank\">Hedera Discord<\/a>. The improved Discord will now cater to the broader Hedera community of retail users and associated ecosystems; it will continue to support and foster a wide range of channels specific to developer support, feedback, and notification of developer-focused announcements. Hedera welcomes everyone to join the new Discord and make connections with the team and other community members. Click <a href=\"https:\/\/discord.gg\/hedera\" target=\"_blank\">this link<\/a> to join!<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"color-ultraviolet\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Network Updates<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The first major network update of 2022 was the announcement that the <a href=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/blog\/hedera-governing-council-votes-to-purchase-hashgraph-ip-commits-to-open-source-worlds-most-advanced-distributed-ledger-technology\" target=\"_blank\">Hedera Governing Council would purchase the IP to the Hashgraph consensus algorithm with a commitment to open-sourcing the codebase under Apache 2.0 license.<\/a> This decision was made with the goal of incentivizing community participation. The <a href=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/roadmap\" target=\"_blank\">Hedera roadmap<\/a> was also made public in 2022. You can find the open-sourced codebase <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/hashgraph\/hedera-services\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/blog\/hedera-governing-council-announces-election-of-four-new-directors\" target=\"_blank\">the Hedera Governing Council has elected four new directors<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Tasker Generes, Vice President of Vision and Innovation, ServiceNow &#8211; term ending December 31, 2023<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Monique Morrow, Sr. Distinguished Architect of Emerging Technologies, Syniverse Technologies &#8211; term ending December 31, 2023<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Shyam Nagarajan, Executive Partner, Web3.0 and Sustainability, IBM Consulting &#8211; term ending December 31, 2023<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ian Putter, Head Blockchain Center of Excellence, Standard Bank Group &#8211; term ending December 31, 2023<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now let\u2019s dive into some more technical network updates:<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"color-ultraviolet\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Staking:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In 2022, native <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.hedera.com\/hedera\/core-concepts\/staking\">staking went live on Hedera<\/a>, and staking phases I, II, and III were achieved. This means that users can now stake their $HBAR to a node of their choice via supporting wallets and exchanges and earn rewards for doing so.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">At the end of 2022, 31.3 billion HBAR was staked to the network!<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"color-ultraviolet\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>EVM Compatibility:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In 2022, Hedera took a bet on the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and started making contributions to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyperledger.org\/use\/besu\" target=\"_blank\">Hyperledger Besu Project<\/a>. The reason behind striving for EVM equivalence is simple: many existing web3 applications are seamlessly integrated with EVM chains, therefore becoming equivalent with the most popular virtual machine will incentivize existing dapps to integrate and help grow the Hedera ecosystem and community. Also, research shows that the EVM is the default starting point for new web3 developers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The first feature launched to support EVM compatibility was <a href=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/smart-contract\" target=\"_blank\">smart contracts<\/a> which are native to the Ethereum ecosystem. Hedera now is compatible with solidity-compiled smart contracts and has seen their implementation succeed. Smart contracts onboarded the first DeFi applications to the network which has ramped up significant TVL. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.staderlabs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stader Labs<\/a>: 90m, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saucerswap.finance\/\" target=\"_blank\">Saucer Swap<\/a>: 30m, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heliswap.io\" target=\"_blank\">Heliswap<\/a>: 6m ).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Swirlds Labs has shipped the open-source <a href=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/blog\/anything-you-can-do-you-can-do-on-hedera-introducing-the-json-rpc-relay\" target=\"_blank\">JSON-RPC relay<\/a> which allows developers to interact with Hedera using standard Ethereum tooling.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">To complement this feature, <a href=\"https:\/\/swirldslabs.com\/hashio\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hashio<\/a> was launched, which is a hosted service that provides a JSON-RPC API interface, on top of Hedera\u2019s native API transactions, that offers a familiar Ethereum-like API. Hashio is still in Beta.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In 2022, Hedera began to <a href=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/blog\/leveraging-ethereum-developer-tools-on-hedera\" target=\"_blank\">support a variety of Ethereum-native developer tooling<\/a> including <a href=\"https:\/\/hardhat.org\" target=\"_blank\">hardhat<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/trufflesuite.com\" target=\"_blank\">truffle<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web3js.readthedocs.io\/en\/v1.8.1\/\" target=\"_blank\">web3.js<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.ethers.org\/v5\/\" target=\"_blank\">ether.js <\/a>development frameworks.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"color-ultraviolet\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>HIPs:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Hedera Improvement Proposals process ran smoothly throughout 2022. 17 HIPS have been executed, five of which were community driven including the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hips.hedera.com\/hip\/hip-367\" target=\"_blank\">Unlimited token associations (HIP-367)<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hips.hedera.com\/hip\/hip-32\" target=\"_blank\">Auto account creation (HIP-32)<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hips.hedera.com\/hip\/hip-18\" target=\"_blank\">Custom fees (HIP-18)<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hips.hedera.com\/hip\/hip-573\" target=\"_blank\">Blanket exemptions for custom fee collectors (HIP-573)<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hips.hedera.com\/hip\/hip-351\" target=\"_blank\">Random number generation (HIP-351)<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"color-ultraviolet\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>HashScan Explorer:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hashscan.io\/mainnet\/dashboard\" target=\"_blank\">HashScan<\/a> quickly became the most popular explorer of the Hedera network, launched in 2022 by Swirlds Labs. This explorer allows users to track accounts, transactions, and tokens as well as mirror nodes, consensus nodes, topics, and contracts. With HashScan, users can also track and calculate an estimate of their staking rewards.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"color-ultraviolet\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Use Cases:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Hundreds of projects launched on the Hedera network in 2022, leading to increased developer activity and retail transactions. As the list of use cases is very long and we don\u2019t want to exclude anyone, please make sure to check out all the web3 use cases <a href=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/ecosystem\/web3-applications\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and all of the enterprise applications <a href=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/ecosystem\/enterprise-applications\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"color-ultraviolet\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Metrics<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Hedera mainnet has seen more activity in the year 2022 than any previous year. Let\u2019s dive into the metrics:<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"color-ultraviolet\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Transactions:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We closed off the year with a total of 530M transactions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The average TPS of the networks was 18.98, competitive with some of the leading chains in the industry.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-image=\"1505574\" src=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Hedera-TPS.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The non-fungible token transfers have generally been trending upwards as well as the fungible token transfers:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-image=\"1505583\" src=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Hedera-token-transfers_2023-01-24-170334_isli.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-image=\"1505581\" src=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Hedera-NFT-transfers_2023-01-24-170329_lrgz.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We witnessed the smart contract activity be relatively steady throughout the year with spikes during the release of new applications and protocols:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-image=\"1505582\" src=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Hedera-Smart-Contract-Transactions_2023-01-24-170331_wzqb.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"color-ultraviolet\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Accounts<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">769.7K accounts were created in 2022 &#8211; 276.6K of which are active compared to the total\u00a01,600,026 existing accounts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-image=\"1505579\" src=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Hedera-Ecosystem-Retail-Accounts_2023-01-24-170308_ospf.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The number of builder accounts on the network increased steadily month over month, with exponential growth in the latter half of the year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-image=\"1505575\" src=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Active-Ecosystem-Builder-accounts_2023-01-24-170255_cmdb.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The number of commits coming from the community relative to the core team has also been on an uptrend throughout 2022:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-image=\"1505578\" src=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Hedera-Developer-Contributions_2023-01-24-170304_seli.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"color-ultraviolet\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Events<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Hedera team attended, was honored at, and sponsored a huge variety of events throughout the year 2022. This is more than 100 applications per month, which is a healthy signal for ecosystem development and developer interest.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">40% of applicants self-selected as Metaverse, 29% as Crypto Economy, 7% as Sustainable Impact, and 5% as Fintech and Payments. The remaining 19% applied without selecting a specific fund category. That 69% of applications fell into the crypto economy and metaverse fund categories indicate a hunger for these use cases within the Hedera ecosystem.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" data-image=\"1505576\" src=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Gedera-Grant-Application_2023-01-24-170257_opyt.png\"\/><\/figure>\n<h4 class=\"color-ultraviolet\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Grants Given<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This year, the Foundation has given 195 grants. The Metaverse and Crypto Economy funds were the most prolific, accounting for 37% and 28% of grants given, respectively. The size of grants from these funds also varied most &#8211; with a higher percentage of grants for projects with smaller scopes coming to market faster.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" data-image=\"1505577\" src=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/HBAR-Foundation-Grants_2023-01-24-170300_nkmg.png\"\/><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">To date, 89 projects are live on mainnet &#8211; 45% of all grantee projects. This is remarkably fast, given that the majority of grants were committed this year. This again speaks to the quality of projects and commitment by those teams to developing and deploying on Hedera.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"color-ultraviolet\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">All in all, 2022 has introduced significant activity and action potential to the Hedera network.
