Understanding the Rent Settings<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Every entity on Hedera has the fields <strong><em>expirationTime<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>autorenewPeriod<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>autorenewAccount<\/em><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong><em>expirationTime<\/em><\/strong> is the date and time when the entity expires<\/li>\n<li>The <strong><em>autorenewPeriod<\/em><\/strong> is the number of seconds by which the entity expiration is extended each auto-renew event<\/li>\n<li>The <strong><em>autorenewAccount<\/em><\/strong> is the account that will pay for rent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These fields can be set during creation and changed anytime with an update transaction. Defining How Rent Will Be Paid<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Smart contracts on Hedera can pay for rent in two ways: external funds or contract funds.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"color-ultraviolet\"><strong>2.1 Paying Rent from External Funds (autorenewAccount)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>To pay rent for a contract from external funds (another account or contract), specify the <strong><em>autorenewAccount<\/em><\/strong> field using .<strong><em>setAutoRenewAccontId()<\/em><\/strong>. You can specify this and other rent-relevant fields for newly deployed contracts (using <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.hedera.com\/hedera\/sdks-and-apis\/sdks\/smart-contracts\/create-a-smart-contract#contractcreateflow\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ContractCreateFlow()<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nor <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.hedera.com\/hedera\/sdks-and-apis\/sdks\/smart-contracts\/create-a-smart-contract#contractcreatetransaction\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ContractCreateTransaction()<\/strong><\/a>) and for existing contracts (using <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.hedera.com\/hedera\/sdks-and-apis\/sdks\/smart-contracts\/update-a-smart-contract\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ContractUpdateTransaction()<\/strong><\/a>). <\/p>\n<p>The sample function in the first tab below deploys a new contract that will be renewed by the account specified in the variable <strong><em>autorenewAcc<\/em><\/strong>. Note that the key for that account (<strong><em>autorenewAccKey<\/em><\/strong>) must sign the contract creation transaction. If you specify an admin key for the contract, that key must sign the transaction as well (<strong><em>cAdminKey<\/em><\/strong>). You also have the option to use <strong><em>.setAutoRenewPeriod()<\/em><\/strong> if you wish to specify that property for the contract. Valid renewal windows are between 30 and 92.5 days \u2013 a default of 30 days (7,776,000 seconds) is used if a value is not specified.<\/p>\n<p>The function in the second tab updates an existing contract. An admin key must be specified during contract creation for a contract to be mutable. The function updates the <strong><em>autorenewPeriod<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0for the contract from the default of 30 days to the maximum possible value of 8,000,001 seconds (or 92.5 days).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"body-text BodyCopy mb-40 style-1\">\n<p>You can see an example that uses these functions in <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ed-marquez\/hedera-example-contract-rent\/blob\/master\/index.js\">index.js<\/a><br \/>\nin this <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ed-marquez\/hedera-example-contract-rent\" target=\"_blank\">GitHub repository<\/a>. These two tutorials show how you can send HBAR to contracts using the Hedera SDKs and Solidity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/blog\/how-to-send-and-receive-hbar-using-smart-contracts-part-1-using-the-sdk\" target=\"_blank\">How to Send and Receive HBAR Using Smart Contracts \u2013 Part 1: Using the SDK<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hedera.com\/blog\/how-to-send-and-receive-hbar-using-smart-contracts-part-2-solidity\" target=\"_blank\">How to Send and Receive HBAR Using Smart Contracts \u2013 Part 2: Using Solidity<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With the SDK, you can simply do a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.hedera.com\/hedera\/sdks-and-apis\/sdks\/cryptocurrency\/transfer-cryptocurrency\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>TransferTransaction()<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nto send HBAR to contracts \u2013 this doesn\u2019t require having <em>payable<\/em><br \/>\nfunctions or <em>receive()<\/em> or <em>fallback()<\/em> functions. This approach is simple and could be suitable if you want to enable users of your contracts to easily make donations.<\/p>\n<p>With Solidity, you can send HBAR to your contracts with <strong><em>fallback()<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>receive()<\/em><\/strong>, or <strong><em>payable<\/em><\/strong> functions. The <strong><em>transfer<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>send<\/strong>, and <strong>call<\/strong> methods also work.
